Description:

Silk charmeuse is one of the most beautiful, and most challenging, fabrics to sew. With its luminous surface and fluid drape, it elevates any garment, but it also demands precision, patience, and the right techniques.

In this six-week online course, Lynda shares the professional methods she uses to work successfully with silk charmeuse. You’ll learn how to handle, cut, mark, and sew this luxurious fabric with confidence, avoiding common pitfalls and achieving refined results.

Rather than focusing on completing a single garment, this class is technique-driven. You’ll learn all the essential construction skills needed to sew a silk charmeuse blouse, from clean seams and elegant hems to polished closures and finishes, skills you can apply to many future projects.

By the end of the course, you’ll understand how silk charmeuse behaves and how to work with it rather than against it, giving you the confidence to use this fabric in your own designs.

What You’ll Learn

  • Preparing, laying out, cutting, and marking silk charmeuse

  • Sewing precise darts, including French seam darts

  • Creating smooth, durable seams and delicate baby hems

  • Constructing a hidden placket and collar with stand

  • Sewing sleeve plackets, cuffs, and setting sleeves cleanly

  • Professional edge finishes for a polished interior

  • Decorative details appropriate for fine silk fabrics

Note: While you will not complete a full blouse during the course, you will learn all the core techniques required to sew one successfully.

Supplies:

  • Blouse/shirt pattern of your choice that has a collar, front placket, sleeve placket. (NOTE: This is so that you can make samples of the techniques taught along with Lynda. Consider using the smallest size of the pattern so that you're not using as much silk charmeuse, since it's so expensive.)

  • At least 1 yard of silk charmeuse, for samples (you can also use rayon challis as it handles the same)

  • Tissue paper

  • 1 yard silk organza to stabilize samples (you may use fusible instead of organza)

  • Polyester thread

  • Microtex or universal needles, #70
